GATE Exam Pattern

Graduate Aptitude Test In Engineering Exam conducts for those students who have desire to get admission in M.E./M.Tech/Direct Ph.D programmes in IITs, NITs, GFTI and various private institutions. For the ease of applicants here we are providing latest GATE 2018 Exam Pattern here.

  • GATE 2018 Exam will be conducted as Computer Based Test (CBT).
  • In GATE, there will be 23 papers and 65 questions.
  • The examination will be divided in two parts i.e. General Aptitude and Technical.
  • GATE Examination 2018 contains total 100 marks.
  • Duration of 3 hours will be given to complete the paper of GATE 2018 Examination.
  • There will be a Negative Marking of 1/3 marks for the questions carrying 1 mark. Likewise, for questions carrying 2 marks, 2/3 marks will be deducted. No negative marking for Numerical Answer Type questions.

Question Types Two types of questions asked:

  • Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)
  • Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions
Marking Scheme
  • For 1-mark MCQs, 1/3 mark will be deducted for every incorrect attempt.
  • In case of 2-mark MCQs, the candidate will be penalised 2/3 mark for wrong attempt
  • For questions that aren’t attempted, zero marks will be awarded.
  • There is no negative marking for numerical answer type (NAT) questions.
Sections Question paper of GATE 2018 will consist of three sections:

  • General Aptitude*
  • Engineering Mathematics (for XL papers it is Chemistry)*
  • Subject-specific section

 GATE Paper Structure for Various Papers
  • There will be carried 15% marks of total marks, General Aptitude section will contain 15% marks and rest of the 70% marks will be contained by the core subject of the paper in the papers of AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN, ME, MN, MT, PE, PI, TF and XE, Engineering.
  • General Aptitude section will carry 15% of the total marks and remaining 85% marks will be carried by the core subject of the paper in the papers AR, CY, EY, GG, MA, PH and XL.
  • In General Aptitude section 5 questions of 1 Mark and 5 questions of 2 marks.
  • Question paper other than GG, XE and XL will contain 25 questions of 1 mark and 30 questions of 2

GATE Exam Pattern for XE Paper
  • In section A, 11 questions (7 questions of 1 mark and 4 questions of 2 marks) will be asked from Engineering Mathematics.
  • This section is compulsory to attempt.
  • Any two of XE sections B to H contains 22 questions (9 questions carrying 1 mark and 13 questions carrying 2 marks)

Types of Questions in GATE 2018
Multiple Choice Questions Numerical Questions

These questions carry 1 or 2 marks each in all papers and sections.

All the questions will be objective in nature with a choice of four answers, out of which the candidate has to mark the correct answer(s).

Questions will contain 1 or 2 marks each in all papers and sections.

The answer given for these questions will be real numbers.

All the questions are compulsory to attempt by candidates.

For Numerical Questions

There is no negative marking applied for Numerical question.

General Aptitude (GA) Questions

  • This is very important section for attempt to all papers.
  • The GA section will contain 5 questions carrying 1 mark each (sub-total 5 marks) and 5 questions carrying 2 marks each (sub-total 10 marks).
  • The GA question will be of total 15 marks

For Multiple Choice Questions

  • There will be negative marking.
  • 1/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer for 1-mark question.
  • For 2 marks question, 2/3 marks will be deducted as negative marking.
