IAS Preliminary Exam Syllabus includes 2 papers i.e. Paper 1 and Paper 2 for which complete syllabus is given here:

Paper 1 General Studies Paper 2 Aptitude Skills
  • History of India and Indian national movement
  • General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change – that do not require subject specialization General Science.
  • Indian and world geography- Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.
  • Indian politics and governance-Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
  • Current events of national and international importance
  • Economic and social development Ecology- – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc
  • Comprehension
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability
  • Interpersonal skills including communication skills

IAS Main Exam Syllabus

Main examination includes 2 paper i.e. paper A and paper B.

  • In paper A, there are 2 parts
  • In Paper B there is 7 parts.

Paper A

Paper I:  IAS Mains Syllabus for any Indian Language

  • In this examination applicants have to select any one language that included in Eighth Schedule of Constitution.
  • This exam is not mandatory for applicants who are belong and living Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim States.

Paper II: Civil Services Mains syllabus for English

By conducting English paper organization intends to examine the communication skills and understand serious discursive prose and to check ability to express his/her thoughts properly in English and related Indian Language.

Pattern of questions may be as follows:-

  • Comprehension of given passages
  • Precis Writing
  • Usage and Vocabulary

Paper B

Paper 1: Essay

In this applicants need write an essay on a given particular topic. Aspirants have to select that topic through this they can easily assemble their ideas in logical.

Paper 2: General Studies 1

  • Indian culture will cover the salient aspects of Art Forms, Literature and Architecture from ancient to modern times.
  • Indian Heritage/Culture, World History & Geography).
  • Post-independence consolidation and reorganization within the country.
  • The Freedom Struggle – its various stages and important contributors /contributions from different parts of the country.
  • Modern Indian history from about the middle of the eighteenth century until the present- significant events, personalities, issues.

Paper 3: Civil Services Mains Mains Exam Syllabus for General Studies 2

  • Modern Indian history from about the middle of the eighteenth century until the present- significant events, personalities, issues.
  • Indian culture will cover the salient aspects of Art Forms, Literature and Architecture from ancient to modern times.
  • Post-independence consolidation and reorganization within the country.
  • Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International Relations).
  • The Freedom Struggle – its various stages and important contributors /contributions from different parts of the country.

Paper 4: General Studies 3

  • Indian Economy and issues relating to planning, mobilization of resources, growth, development and employment.
  • Technology, Economic Development, Bio-Diversity, Environment, Security & Disaster Management).
  • Development, Bio diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management.
  • Government Budgeting.
  • Inclusive growth and issues arising from it.

Paper 5: General Studies 4

  • Attitude: content, structure, function; its influence and relation with thought and behaviour; moral and political attitudes; social influence and persuasion.
  • Human Values – lessons from the lives and teachings of great leaders, reformers and administrators; role of family, society and educational institutions in inculcating values.
  • Ethics and Human Interface: Essence, determinants and consequences of Ethics in human actions; dimensions of ethics; ethics in private and public relationships.
  • Ethics, Integrity & Aptitude)

Paper 6: Optional 1 (Of your choice)/ Optional 2 (Of your choice)

  • Agriculture, Chemistry, Medical science, Electrical Engineering, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Sociology, Statistics, Law, Essays, Commerce & Accountancy and Psychology

UPSC IAS Exam Pattern

UPSC civil services mains examination is going to be conducted in the month of October 2017 for those candidates who have qualified Prelims Exams. All those candidates, who qualify the UPSC mains exam, will be called to appear for interview round. Candidates can give interview in their preferred language. Those candidates who are going to attempt main examination can find below the UPSC IAS main Exam pattern.

Interview Round

Candidates who will qualify in Preliminary and Main examination will be called to appear for Interview which will be of 275 marks. Interview will be conducted by the expert panel of the organization in order to check the understanding level of the applicants for the required posts.  Finally recommended candidates will get appointed at IAS officer rank after qualifying all recruitment stages.
